The UN Asks The Palestinian Authority to Reverse Suspension of Al Jazeera
In an ironic move, the UN is asking the Palestinian Authority to reverse their recent suspension of Al Jazeera operations in the West Bank. The suspension follows PA allegations that Al Jazeera engaged in incitement.
Al Jazeera is a news site that is backed by Qatar and has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Six Al Jazeera “journalists” active in Gaza were members of Hamas or the Palestinian Islamic Jihad according to evidence released by the IDF. Al Jazeera was banned by Israel last year.
This is not the first time such bans have been placed on the “news site”. An Egyptian court ordered Al Jazeera to stop broadcasting in Egypt in 2013, saying that it was “inciting violence that led to the deaths of Egyptians. The Indian government stopped Al Jazeera broadcasting in 2015 for showing disputed maps of India. Bahrain banned Al Jazeera journalists from reporting from their country saying the station was biased towards Israel and against Bahrain.
The UN human rights office issued a statement expressing “deep concern” over the PA’s decision to halt the Qatar-based network’s broadcasts.
