US Declines Israel’s Request to Extend Lebanon Withdrawal Deadline

The United States has declined Israel’s request to further extend the deadline for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) withdrawal from southern Lebanon. The current deadline remains set for February 18, 2025.

In November, a ceasefire agreement was brokered by the United States between Israel and Hezbollah, aiming to halt hostilities that had escalated since October 2023. As part of this agreement, the IDF was to withdraw from southern Lebanon within a 60-day period, initially set to conclude in late January 2025. However, concerns over the Lebanese Army’s deployment and Hezbollah’s activities led to an initial extension until February 18.

Israeli officials have expressed concern regarding the Lebanese Army’s effectiveness in southern Lebanon. Reports indicate that the army’s deployment has been slower than anticipated, and there are concerns that Hezbollah is regrouping in the area. Israel has emphasized the need to maintain a buffer zone to prevent Hezbollah from reestablishing a presence near the border.

Despite Israel’s request for a further extension, the US administration has reiterated its commitment to the February 18 deadline. US Deputy Mideast Envoy Morgan Ortagus, after visiting Lebanon and Israel, emphasized that the administration views February 18 as a “firm date” for the completion of Israel’s withdrawal.
