Israel: No More Releasing of Prisoners Until Humiliating Handover Ceremonies End

Israel has postponed the release of over 600 Palestinian prisoners following the “humiliating ceremonies” orchestrated by Hamas during the handover of Israeli hostages.

The exchange was part of a ceasefire agreement under which Hamas released six Israeli hostages, while Israel was set to free 620 Palestinian inmates. However, Israeli officials objected to how Hamas presented the hostages—parading them before crowds alongside armed militants in what was seen as a propaganda stunt. One particularly distressing incident involved the mishandling of remains of one of the hostages.

Kavod Hameis is a fundamental principle usually respected by all nations of the world. The way Hamas handled the remains was seen not only as a moral and humanitarian violation but also as an affront to basic human dignity.

The Israeli government’s response—halting the prisoner release—was partially influenced by the demand that all future hostage exchanges, including the transfer of remains, be conducted with proper respect and without political spectacle.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office released a statement condemning these actions, declaring that the prisoner release would be delayed until Hamas provides assurances that future exchanges will be conducted without degrading displays. The Israeli government views Hamas’ behavior as a violation of the ceasefire terms and an insult to the hostages and their families.

The delay in the prisoner release has sparked anger among Palestinian families expecting their relatives’ return. Hamas has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire, while Israeli officials insist that future handovers must be conducted with dignity.
