Czech Cold Water Swimmers Set New World Record
2,461 cold-water swimmers in the Czech Republic set a new world record for the largest “polar bear dip” on March 1, 2025.
The event took place at Most Lake in the northwest region of the country, surpassing the previous record of 1,799 participants set in Mielno, Poland, on February 15, 2015. To achieve official recognition, participants were required to wear standard bathing suits, submerge themselves to at least waist depth, and remain in the water collectively for a minimum of one minute. The water temperature during the attempt was a chilly 3.5 degrees Celsius (38.2 degrees Fahrenheit), well below the maximum limit of 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) stipulated for such records.
David Vencl, the event’s organizer, expressed pride in the accomplishment, stating, “Czechs are a nation of polar swimmers.” Vencl is no stranger to cold-water feats; four years prior, he set a world record in men’s swimming under ice by covering a distance of 80.9 meters (265 feet).
The tradition of cold-water swimming, often referred to as “polar bear dipping,” has deep roots in various cultures, symbolizing endurance and the human spirit’s ability to confront and overcome natural challenges. In the Czech Republic, this practice has gained popularity, reflecting a broader appreciation for communal activities that promote health, resilience, and unity.
Such events also highlight the importance of proper preparation and safety measures. Participants typically undergo gradual acclimatization to cold temperatures, ensuring their bodies can safely endure the shock of icy waters. Medical professionals are usually on-site during these events to monitor participants and provide immediate assistance if necessary.
The successful record attempt at Most Lake not only showcases the participants’ fortitude but also brings attention to the Czech Republic’s rich tradition of embracing challenging physical activities. It serves as an inspiration to communities worldwide, illustrating how collective effort and determination can lead to extraordinary achievements.
