Second Annual “Florida Man Games” Showcases Unique and Odd Competition

The Florida Man Games returned for their second annual event on March 1, 2025, at the St. Johns County Fairgrounds, drawing participants and spectators from across the state to celebrate Florida’s distinctive culture through a series of unconventional competitions.

Building on the success of the inaugural games held in St. Augustine, this year’s event featured ten teams competing in events that playfully highlighted the state’s reputation for eccentricity. Competitions included the “Evading Arrest Obstacle Course,” “Beer Belly Sumo Wrestling,” “Hurricane Party Prep: Grocery Aisle Brawl,” and “Human Beer Pong.”These events were designed to reflect the spirit of the “Florida Man” phenomenon, which often showcases bizarre and unusual news stories from the state.

Returning champions, team Hanky Spanky from St. Augustine, defended their title against new challengers, including an all-female team called the Ball Busters. Participants embraced the whimsical nature of the games, with many expressing that a true “Florida Man” is inherently prepared for such antics. Croix Bruns, a 29-year-old technician, remarked, “A true Florida Man doesn’t prepare for the games. They’re just born ready to be great.”

Beyond the competitions, attendees had the opportunity to engage with various attractions that embodied Florida’s unique character. Guests interacted with alligators from Gatorland, rode a mechanical alligator, and enjoyed performances by the “Midget Wrestling Warriors.” Additionally, NASCAR driver Jeffrey Earnhardt hosted lawnmower racing, adding to the day’s eclectic entertainment.

Comedian and announcer Che Durena praised the event, stating it perfectly encapsulated Florida’s distinctive spirit by combining chaos, entertainment, and community celebration. He noted, “It’s exactly on-brand the way I thought it would be. It’s the right level of grimy and extravagance and debaucherous. It’s exactly what I want.”

The Florida Man Games were conceived as a lighthearted homage to the state’s quirky reputation, offering residents and visitors alike a chance to partake in and celebrate the unconventional aspects of Florida culture. Organizers plan to continue this annual tradition, further solidifying the event’s place in the state’s diverse tapestry of festivities.
