Israeli Security Forces Prevent Terror Plot Targeting Jerusalem’s Old City
In a significant achievement for Israel’s security services, a dangerous terror plot intended to harm innocent civilians in Jerusalem’s Old City was successfully thwarted in recent weeks. The planned attack, which was set to take place at the Damascus Gate entrance, involved an Arab Israeli citizen who had been deeply influenced by extremist ideologies. The timely intervention by Israeli police and the Shin Bet security service prevented a potential tragedy during a period of heightened tensions.
According to official reports, the primary suspect, identified as Uday Mobarsham, a 24-year-old resident of Umm al-Fahm, had been preparing to execute a shooting attack during the Muslim month of Ramadan. Investigations revealed that Mobarsham was self-radicalized through exposure to terrorist propaganda online. Over the course of months, he meticulously planned the attack, acquiring a submachine gun and engaging in weapons training in order to carry out his nefarious intent.
Authorities apprehended Mobarsham before he was able to act, also arresting his brother, Raed Mobarsham, and additional individuals believed to have assisted in the procurement of the weapon and logistics. During the arrests, law enforcement discovered the firearm intended for use, along with other materials that clearly indicated the seriousness of the plot.
Security officials highlighted that the attack was specifically timed for the sensitive period of Ramadan, when thousands of visitors, both Jews and Muslims, converge upon Jerusalem’s Old City. The suspect reportedly intended to exploit the large gatherings at Damascus Gate, a prominent entryway to the holy sites, in order to maximize casualties and spread fear. His actions, had they been carried out, could have led to severe unrest and loss of life.
The Shin Bet emphasized that Mobarsham’s motivations were rooted in consuming radical Islamist content from global terror organizations, further exacerbated by exposure to recent events and regional tensions. Investigators confirmed that he operated independently, not under the direct orders of any formal terror network, which reflects a growing trend of self-radicalized individuals posing a significant challenge to security services.
This case shows the ongoing vigilance and tireless efforts of Israeli security forces in combating threats from within and beyond the country’s borders. It also highlights the dangers of unmonitored exposure to extremist ideologies, particularly among youth susceptible to incitement. Law enforcement officials reiterated their commitment to protecting all residents and visitors of Jerusalem, ensuring the safety of worshipers and the sanctity of the city, especially during sensitive times on the Jewish and Muslim calendars.
The courts have since filed indictments against Mobarsham and his accomplices, charging them with serious offenses related to terrorism, possession of illegal firearms, and endangering public safety. Security officials are continuing their investigations to determine whether there are any additional individuals connected to the planned attack.
Israeli leadership expressed gratitude to the security forces involved, noting that their swift action likely prevented a major tragedy. The mayor of Jerusalem and various government ministers praised the Shin Bet and police, emphasizing the importance of continued alertness and proactive defense measures.
