Israeli Airline Launches Points Program for War-Time Reservists

In a significant move to recognize military service during ongoing conflicts, El Al Israel Airlines has announced a new initiative converting reserve duty days into travel benefits for soldiers who served extensive periods since the October 7 attacks.

The program, launching December 29, will award 100 Matmid Frequent Flyer points for each day of reserve duty to eligible service members. To qualify, reservists must have accumulated at least 100 days of active duty since October 7, 2023, marking one of the longest sustained military mobilizations in recent Israeli history.

“This initiative transforms days of service into tangible travel opportunities,” said an El Al spokesperson. The conversion rate means that soldiers who served 175 days could earn enough points for a round-trip flight to Athens, providing a much-needed respite after extended military service.

The program excludes reservists who previously received benefits under the February 2024 “Fly The Flag” campaign, indicating the airline’s effort to distribute benefits across different service member groups. The application window runs through January 15, 2025, though it may close earlier if allocations are exhausted.

Military analysts note this comes amid a broader national discussion about compensating reservists, many of whom left careers and families for extended periods during the ongoing conflict. The program allows points to be used for various travel benefits, including award tickets, seat upgrades, and additional baggage allowances.

While the initiative has garnered positive attention, it also highlights the extensive nature of the current military mobilization, with some reservists serving well beyond traditional duty periods. The 100-day minimum requirement suggests the significant commitment many soldiers have made since October.

The program launches against the backdrop of continuing regional tensions and represents one of several efforts by Israeli corporations to acknowledge the sacrifices of military reservists during this period of national emergency.
