The “Axis of Evil” Solidifies with Planned Treaty Between Iran and Russia
Russian President Putin and Iranian President Pezeshkian are set to meet in Russia this week on January 17 to finalize a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement, the Kremlin announced today.
The discussions will focus on strengthening ties between Moscow and Tehran, with key areas of cooperation including trade, investment, transport, logistics, and humanitarian efforts, according to the Kremlin statement.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced in October that Russia and Iran intend to sign a “comprehensive” treaty, which will include closer defense cooperation. Lavrov stated that the treaty would strengthen Russian-Iranian relations and confirm both parties’ commitment to peace and security at regional and global levels. The exact nature of the defense ties was not specified.
This alliance is seen as a significant threat by both the U.S. and Israel, particularly as conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine escalate. Israel has been engaged in hostilities with Iranian-backed groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah, with direct confrontations involving missile strikes and airstrikes on both sides.
The United States has accused Iran of supplying ballistic missiles and drones to Russia for use in Ukraine, leading to sanctions on entities involved in these transfers. Tehran denies these allegations.
Meanwhile, with former U.S. President Donald Trump poised to re-enter the political scene, the dynamics of U.S. foreign policy may shift significantly in coming weeks. Trump’s previous administration was known for its hardline stance on both Russia and Iran, potentially impacting future developments in these strategic alliances.
Russia has also been strengthening ties with North Korea. North Koreans have been sending troops to fight against Ukraine.
