Delta Flight Overturns at Toronto Airport Amidst Snowstorm; All Passengers Survive
A Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis to Toronto experienced a harrowing incident on Monday, February 17, 2025. The aircraft overturned upon landing at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport during a severe snowstorm, yet all 80 individuals on board survived, with only minor injuries reported B”H.
The flight, operated by Endeavor Air—a regional subsidiary of Delta—was a Mitsubishi CRJ-900LR carrying 76 passengers and four crew members. As the plane approached Toronto, the airport was engulfed in heavy snowfall and gusty winds reaching up to 40 mph (65 kph). Despite these challenging conditions, the aircraft attempted to land at approximately 2:15 p.m. Upon touchdown, the plane flipped onto its roof on the snowy tarmac. Emergency response teams arrived promptly, ensuring all passengers and crew were safely evacuated. Eighteen individuals sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals; fortunately, none were life-threatening.
John Nelson, a passenger on the flight, recounted the tense moments leading up to the accident. He described the descent as turbulent, with noticeable gusty winds and snow-covered runways. Upon landing, the aircraft hit the ground forcefully, skidded sideways, and ultimately flipped over, resulting in a fireball on the left side. Despite the chaos, all passengers managed to evacuate safely.
The incident occurred in challenging weather conditions. The Meteorological Service of Canada reported blowing snow with winds of 32 mph (51 kph), gusting up to 40 mph (65 kph), and temperatures around 16.5 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 8.6 degrees Celsius) at the time of the accident. These factors likely contributed to the difficulties experienced during the landing.
Deborah Flint, CEO of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, expressed profound gratitude that there were no fatalities and that injuries were relatively minor. She commended the swift and effective response of emergency personnel, stating that their actions were executed as planned.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford also conveyed relief, noting the absence of casualties and affirming that provincial officials are in contact with local authorities to offer any necessary assistance.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has initiated an investigation into the incident, with support from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. The focus will be on determining the precise causes of the accident, including the role of weather conditions and any potential mechanical issues.
This event marks the fourth significant aviation accident in North America within the past month. Previous incidents include a midair collision near Washington, D.C., a medical transport jet crash in Philadelphia, and a commuter plane accident in Alaska. These occurrences have raised concerns about aviation safety and underscore the importance of rigorous safety protocols.
This incident follows yesterday’s report on Congressman Eric Swalwell blaming former President Donald Trump for recent aviation accidents—a claim that has sparked controversy and debate over responsibility and airline safety in the current political climate.
