Significant Decrease in Terror Attacks During Ramadan This Year Due to Intensified Security
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) together with the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) have reported a marked 80% drop in terror attacks emanating from the West Bank during the current Ramadan period, as compared to the same time last year. This decrease, officials say, is a result of strategic preventive efforts and the relentless work of Israeli security forces in safeguarding the country’s citizens from terror threats.
According to the statement released by military authorities, during Ramadan in 2023, there were 27 serious terror incidents perpetrated from within Judea and Samaria. In contrast, this year, the number of such attacks dropped significantly to just three. These figures, say officials, reflect not only a successful clampdown on known terror cells but also a broader disruption of planned attacks through pre-emptive arrests and targeted operations.
Throughout the current Ramadan, the IDF and Shin Bet carried out numerous security operations across various parts of Yehudah and Shomron. As part of these activities, 401 individuals suspected of involvement in terror-related activities were apprehended. Additionally, 105 illegal weapons were seized, and 13 terrorists were eliminated in operations aimed at dismantling infrastructure linked to known hostile groups.
Ramadan, which is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting and spiritual reflection, has unfortunately in recent years been a time of heightened tension in the region. Terrorists and radical factions have often exploited the atmosphere to escalate violence, particularly against Israeli civilians and soldiers. In previous years, security officials have seen an uptick in terror incidents during the month, making proactive security efforts all the more crucial during this time.
This year, however, thanks to a combination of increased intelligence-gathering, community-based surveillance, and focused military operations, the potential for violence was significantly curtailed. Military officials emphasized that the security establishment was operating with precision and restraint, with the goal of isolating hostile actors while preserving overall stability in the region.
Senior defense officials noted that part of the strategy involved disrupting the logistical and financial networks of terror groups, thereby limiting their ability to plan or carry out attacks. The coordination between different arms of the security apparatus — including IDF troops, Shin Bet operatives, and local security coordinators in Jewish communities — has proven instrumental in identifying threats early and acting decisively.
Despite the decline in attacks, the IDF has cautioned that the situation remains fluid, and there is no room for complacency. Security officials remain on high alert, particularly in light of ongoing incitement by certain radical elements and calls for violence from terror organizations operating in the region and beyond. The army continues to monitor developments closely, especially as Ramadan progresses and with upcoming Jewish holidays approaching, which historically have also been targeted periods for escalation.
While the dramatic drop in attacks is a welcome development, Israeli officials have stressed that it should not be misunderstood as a signal of reduced danger. On the contrary, the relative calm is the direct result of intensive efforts on the ground and the continued commitment to the safety of all Israeli citizens.
