Tragic Loss in Gaza: Five Netzah Yehuda Soldiers Fall in Ambush Near Beit Hanoun
In a deeply painful development, five Israeli soldiers were killed and 14 others wounded — two of them seriously — during a military operation in northern Gaza on Monday night. The incident occurred near Beit Hanoun at approximately 10 p.m., as soldiers from the Netzah Yehuda Battalion, part of the Kfir Brigade, advanced on foot alongside Israeli armored and engineering forces.
According to the IDF’s preliminary findings, a series of explosive devices detonated, followed immediately by heavy gunfire from Palestinian terrorists. The soldiers were engaged in a mission as part of Israel’s ongoing ground campaign in Gaza, which began in late 2023 with the aim of dismantling Hamas’s terror infrastructure and securing Israel’s southern communities.
While efforts were underway to evacuate the wounded, the rescue team itself came under fire in a coordinated ambush, further endangering those already injured and complicating lifesaving efforts. This grim sequence underscores the grave risks faced by our dedicated soldiers as they strive to protect Am Yisrael.
Among the fallen were Sgt. First Class (res.) Benyamin Asulin, 28, from Haifa; Staff Sgt. Noam Aharon Musgadian, 20, from Jerusalem; Staff Sgt. Meir Shimon Amar, 20, from Jerusalem; and Sgt. Moshe Nissim Frech, 20, also from Jerusalem. All three younger soldiers served in the Netzah Yehuda Battalion, a unit originally established to enable Haredi young men to serve in the IDF while maintaining their Torah observance. The name of the fifth fallen soldier had not been released at the time of this report.
The Netzah Yehuda Battalion, sometimes referred to in the past as “Nahal Haredi,” has symbolized a unique path for those wishing to combine military service with a life of Yiras Shamayim and commitment to mitzvos. The battalion’s losses in this latest attack mark its heaviest blow since the beginning of the war. Before this incident, four of its soldiers had already fallen, including three in a roadside bombing in May.
This particular operation near Beit Hanoun was part of a larger maneuver launched over Shabbos, involving the 646th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade and the northern Gaza Division brigade. Their objective was a fortified Hamas compound on the town’s outskirts, which had been heavily targeted by air and artillery strikes in the days leading up to the ground incursion.
The attack on Monday night stands as the deadliest single incident for Israeli forces in Gaza since June, when eight soldiers lost their lives in Rafah to an anti-tank missile. It also follows a tragic incident two weeks ago in which seven soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in Khan Younis.
Since the ground campaign commenced, the IDF reports that 446 soldiers have fallen in Gaza alone, with a total of 888 military casualties since the beginning of the current conflict. Thirty-nine of these losses have occurred since the last deal to release hostages.
As Klal Yisrael mourns these precious lives, communities throughout Eretz Yisrael and the diaspora are urged to strengthen in Torah learning, tefillah, and acts of chessed as a zechus for the wounded and for the success and safety of our soldiers. The tragic events remind us of the high cost borne by those standing on the front lines to defend our people and our land.
May the memories of the fallen be a blessing and may Hashem grant a complete recovery to the injured, protect our soldiers, and bring a swift and complete salvation to Am Yisrael.
